5 Signs Your Pool's Chemical Balance Is Off
Most pool owners know cloudy water means something's wrong. But by the time water looks cloudy, the imbalance has usually been building for days. Here are five earlier warning signs worth knowing.
1. Eyes and skin feel irritated after swimming
Contrary to popular belief, this is often a sign of low chlorine or imbalanced pH — not too much chlorine. Properly balanced water shouldn't sting.
2. A strong "chemical" smell near the pool
A sharp, harsh smell usually means chloramines have built up — a byproduct of chlorine reacting with contaminants, not fresh chlorine itself. It's typically a sign the pool needs a shock treatment, not less chlorine.
3. Metal fixtures or ladders showing corrosion
Low pH makes water acidic enough to slowly corrode metal ladders, rails, and heater components. If you're noticing new corrosion, it's worth testing pH right away.
4. Scaling or cloudy buildup on tile
White, chalky buildup at the waterline often points to high pH or high calcium hardness. Left unaddressed, it can clog filters and equipment over time.
5. Algae returning quickly after treatment
If algae keeps coming back within days of shocking the pool, it usually means the underlying chlorine or stabilizer levels aren't holding — treating the symptom without fixing the balance underneath.
The bottom line
Test strips are useful, but they're a snapshot, not a full picture. Consistent, professional testing catches drift before it turns into a bigger (and more expensive) problem.
Let us handle the testing.
Our weekly maintenance visits include full chemical testing and balancing, every time — no guesswork.
