Pool Opening Checklist: 7 Steps for a Smooth Season Start
Opening a pool the right way saves you money the rest of the season. Rush it, and you're often chasing algae, cloudy water, or equipment problems for weeks afterward. Here's the sequence we follow on every opening.
1. Clean the cover before you remove it
Debris and standing water on top of the cover will fall straight into your pool if you don't clear it first. Sweep or pump off standing water, then brush away leaves and dirt before pulling the cover.
2. Inspect the water and skim immediately
Whatever color the water is when you open it, don't panic — most pools look rough after winter. Skim the surface right away to remove large debris before it sinks and starts breaking down.
3. Reconnect and inspect equipment
Reattach pumps, filters, and any winterized plumbing. Before powering anything on, check for cracked fittings, loose connections, or anything that shifted over winter — a five-minute inspection here can prevent a much bigger repair later.
4. Start the filtration system
Run the pump and filter continuously for the first 24-48 hours. This is what actually starts clearing the water — chemicals help, but circulation is what does the real work.
5. Test before you treat
Test pH, chlorine, and alkalinity before adding anything. Guessing at chemical needs is the most common way pool owners end up over-correcting and causing new problems.
6. Shock the pool
A season-opening shock treatment clears out whatever built up over the off-season. Follow it with a few days of consistent filtration before swimming.
7. Recheck balance after 48-72 hours
Chemical levels shift as the water clears and circulates. A follow-up test a couple of days in catches anything that needs a second adjustment before you're fully swim-ready.
